SCI Biology for Chemists Meeting

The Young Chemists Panel of the SCI is holding a 2 day residential course
entitled "Biology for Chemists" at Loughborough University on June 26/27 2006.

This meeting is aimed at practising Chemists who wish to gain a greater
understanding of Biology and how it relates to the Chemical Sciences, and will
be suitable for for industrialists, academics and research students. Further

3rd Central European Conference "Chemistry Towards Biology"

8th to 12th September 2006, Kraków, Poland.

This conference is a continuation of a long-term
cooperation among scientists from Central Europe sharing a scientific
interest in chemical biology and biological chemistry.
The 3rd Central European Conference "Chemistry towards Biology" will
specifically address the following research topics:

- Biocatalysis
- Bioinorganic chemistry
- Biological energy conversion
- Biospectroscopy
- Modelling of biological processes and systems
- New materials in medicine
- Structural biology

A major objective of the conference will be to develop a platform for
mutual scientific contacts between researchers from European and other
countries and to foster future collaborations between scientists in these
countries. In view of this perspective we specifically encourage younger
scientists to participate in this event.
In order to register please fill in and send back the attached
registration form before June 15th, 2006. Registration before May 20th
gives you reduction of the conference fee.

Southampton Postgraduate Meeting December 2005

The Southampton postgraduate meeting was a great success with over 75 attendees, 10 speakers and 28 posters. Excellent sponsorship was received from Syngenta, GlaxoSmithKline and Ely Lilly, and prizes were awarded for the best posters and presentations.

The BioOrganic Group of the RSC

Bio-Organic Chemistry can be defined as the application of chemical principles and techniques to solve biological problems. It encompasses the synthesis of natural products and other biologically active or medicinal compounds, the use of micro-organisms or enzymes as synthetic reagents (biotransformations), the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and the elucidation of biological reaction mechanisms. The development of gene manipulation technology and genomic information provides enormous opportunities for the developments in Bio-Organic Chemistry.

The group acts to promote Bio-Organic chemistry principally by organising meetings. The main meetings run by the group are held at Firbush in alternate years in September and an annual one day postgraduate symposium in late December, or early January. Other meetings are held on subjects of topical interest as the need arises. Suggestions for meetings are welcomed, particularly joint meetings with other RSC groups or external organisations. The group is run by a committee consisting of a chairman, a secretary, the treasurer and six members. The annual general meeting is held at the postgraduate symposium and is usually followed by a committee meeting.
